Ceci N’est Pas Embres

December 9, 2012

Ceci N’est Pas EmbresFall 2012 marks the launch of a brand new Korsakow film, created by Korsakow co-developer Matt Soar. Two years in the making, Ceci N’est Pas Embres is a ‘database diary’ about a family from Québec moving to southwest France. Featuring personal testimony, animated sequences, and a soundtrack composed especially for the film, Ceci N’est Pas Embres is an attempt to engage the viewer with a series of vignettes that were conceived specifically with Korsakow in mind. The film can be viewed in its entirety on a dedicated website here.

Rick Poynor on ‘Design Academics’: Having His Cake and Eating It Too

April 19, 2012 Design

[This article was swiftly written as a provisional response to Rick Poynor's article The Closed Shop of Design Academia which first appeared on Design Observer on April 13, 2012. The editors of DO had agreed in principle to publish my response, but shortly afterwards decided it should be confined to the comments section of Poynor's article. [...]

The Iron Heel – really, really done!

July 18, 2010 Projects
Thumbnail image for The Iron Heel – really, really done!

After six months’ work, I thought my audio recording of Jack London’s (1908) novel The Iron Heel was finished. Then I tried to publish it online. Ugh. Anyway, the good folks at Librivox came to the rescue, and after a lot of re-editing and tidying up of files, I’m thrilled to say my project is [...]

The Iron Heel

November 28, 2009 Projects

My latest project is to record an audiobook version of Jack London’s 1908 novel The Iron Heel. I was looking around for something new to do (this being my sabbatical) and came across a competition inviting people to record themselves reading science fiction books that are in the public domain. London’s book is a lively [...]

Letter to the Editor: Reading the most recent issue of Sight & Sound (‘Seeing the Light’, April ’09) made me wonder if your magazine shouldn’t be renamed Movies & Men. Your article ‘Talking Shop’ features thirteen (white) cinematographers, only one of whom is a woman. Representative? Perhaps not. Your list of Contributors features fifteen names [...]

Thumbnail image for Korsakow System redevelopment

In October we began planning out the complete redevelopment of the Korsakow System, a software application for creating database narratives. Korsakow was originally created by Florian Thalhofer in 2000. The timelapse video, above, shows Florian hard at work in the CINERG office in downtown Montréal, creating an elaborate paper prototype of the new version. Reprogramming [...]

Dissertation: Graphic Design/Graphic Dissent

Thumbnail image for Dissertation: Graphic Design/Graphic Dissent

Today I read an article on Design Observer by Michael Bierut all about the Ernst Bettler story that appeared some years ago in dotdotdot. The ‘Bettler affair’ was a key part of my PhD dissertation, which I finished in 2002. The dissertation, which I hope is reasonably accessible, addresses the politics of graphic design practice [...]

First year students create rotoscoped animation

With barely any experience using Flash, the 64 first-year students in my Fall 07 Intermedia class courageously embarked on their first ever rotoscoping assignment. For three intensive weeks, we worked with a wild concert video featuring Girl Talk, which was shot and cut together by Brett Gaylor’s Open Source Cinema Project. The results are very [...]

Design Anarchy (Lasn, 2006) – Review

Thumbnail image for Design Anarchy (Lasn, 2006) – Review

This is the unedited version of a review I wrote of Kalle Lasn’s new book Design Anarchy (ORO Editions, 2006) for Eye magazine. He’s a West-coast sneaker marketer with one of the coolest brands around. He’s ironic and media-savvy, and he understands his target audience. He has a singular appreciation of the power of graphic [...]
