There is such a thing as society.

Ten years ago, Andrew Howard, writing in Eye magazine, declared that 'There is such a thing as society'. His article referenced Conservative leader Margaret Thatcher's notorious utterance, in 1987, that 'there is no such thing as society'. Howard's piece also proved to be both a decisive moment in the relaunch of 1964's First Things First manifesto, and a watershed affirmation of graphic design's political and cultural importance.

Today, Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer launched his Government's new budget plans with exactly the same phrase. Has it really taken seventeen years for a politician to publicly challenge the Tories' hubris? Heck, it only took a lowly graphic designer seven.
